Does crate/kennel training work for potty training?

I recently got a 6 month old pomeranian. he is not fully potty trained. he hasnt pooped in my apt yet but he definitely has peed more than a few times. i just bought some puppy pee pads and he just immediately shreds them to pieces. i can tell they are not for him. he will just ingest the materials which could lead to even bigger problems. i also bought some odor eliminating spray to help not encourage to keep marking where he has peed. i have heard that crate/kennel training while im gone during the day can help with potty training and teaching him to only go outside by immediately taking him outside when i get home. has anyone done this to ist with potty training? or any other suggestions? help!
