Lighting my gas powered fireplace.?

I have a gas powered fireplace in my living room. I want to use it cause its freezing. Do i just turn the gas valve on and light a match? Or does it spark automatically? I dont have any logs right now but I was hoping id be able to use it until I get the logs. Thanks for the help
